INTRODUCTION
Guitar is a one-quarter course covering the basics of the guitar instrument and an application of essential music fundamentals. Students will learn the basics of playing guitar at a beginning level through studying music notation, chord symbols, and peer modeling. A brief history of the guitar along with a study of its respective musical styles will also be covered in this course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- learn the basics of how to play the guitar
- Students will learn how to read music notation, chord symbols, and tablature this will create and enhance appreciation for music.
- Students will also gain a better understanding of hand technique.
GUITAR COMPETENCIES
After finishing the Guitar lessons, students must be capable to achieve the following:
- Perform the Proper hand technique
- Know the proper way of tuning the guitar
- Know how to read tablature
- Learn the proper Finger exercises
- Learn how to read chords blocks
TRAINING DELIVERY MODE
Face-to-face: to obtain an understanding of basic concepts that are required to undertake further study (Elaborated lectures / discussion and activities for each session will be prepared by the instructor based on the curriculum/ syllabus objectives, competencies and blueprint).
Self-learning (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and online materials): to reinforce/strengthen students understanding of basic standards and practices.
Internship: Perform music in small groups and as a large guitar ensemble. A cumulative final concert will be scheduled outside of school near the end of the semester to showcase the achievements of the students. (Mentor).
Blended Model: Combine classroom learning with online learning(optional)
EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT
The evaluation should be done as following:
- Daily Class Participation and performance
Students will receive daily participation points that reflect active learning engagement during each class or session. In order to receive all the daily points, students must actively participate in all class activities and have a positive attitude with a constant will to learn. Tardiness to class without a signed pass from the teacher will result in an automatic loss of half of the daily points.
Students with excused absences can receive their points for the day if they see me (a week after the absence) to make up the note taking/practice exercises they missed. Listed below is a break down of the daily point system:
10 points = PRESENT and actively participated and has all needed materials
5 points = TARDY or minimal participation or missing materials
0 points = ABSENT or no participation (*excused absences can make up daily points)
- Performance / Final Concert
Students are required to complete a classroom performance and a final concert. These performances and project make up half of the final grade and are listed below in bold in the course outline.
COURSE PASSING REQUIREMENTS & GRADING SYSTEM
- Attendance 10%
- Class participation 50%
- Final performance 40%
- Total Passing Score for the Course is 80%
Note: upon completing course requirement, students will receive certificate of program completion and/or graduation certificate.
