COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Learn how to use the different kinds of tools used in repairing and cleaning of AC Units
  • Able to learn the different internal and external parts of a window and split air-
    conditioning system.
  • Learn what is the refrigerant cycle of air-conditioning system.
  • Learn how to braze, flare and swaging the copper pipe also proper AC installations.
  • Learn how to recharge or top up the refrigerant gas in air-conditioning system.
  • Learn how to change the compressor of the window A/C and split A/C.
  • Able to trouble shoot a defective split and window A/C.
  • Able to find the basic common problems of a split and window A/C.
  • Able to learn the safety procedures while repairing.

COURSE OUTLINE

LESSON 1: Learning the fundamentals principles of Refrigeration and Air conditioning

    1. Basic Refrigeration Cycles
    2. Four major components of refrigeration cycles and its functions.
    3. Spare parts and accessories of the system
    4. Basic principles of heat transfer
    5. What is Saturation point, Suction superheat and subcooling temperatures?
    6. Different types of Heating and cooling unit conversion and TONs capacity familiarization

LESSON 2: Window type and Split unit AC cooling operation.

    1. Short Quiz – from lesson 1 topic
    2. Types of compressor in window and split unit ac units.
    3. Familiarization of single -phase compressor motor and fan motor windings (CSR)
    4. How to read proper resistance readings of the motor, LRA, FLA and RLA meaning.
    5. Types of condenser and evaporator coil used in both units.
    6. Difference between window AC and Split type units wiring diagram.

LESSON 3: Basic tools, equipment familiarization and its usage.

    1. Short Quiz- from lesson 2 topic.
    2. Manifold gauge – how to read operating pressures and saturation temperatures (PT)
    3. Hygrometer or sling Psychrometer
    4. Clamp meter. Multi meter tester and thermometer
    5. Vacuum Pump, flaring, swaging tool and general hand tools.
    6. Different types of refrigerant gas in Airconditioning application and boiling point temp.

LESSON 4: Copper pipe preparation and Brazing principles

    1. Short Quiz- from lesson 3 topic
    2. Copper pipe flaring and swaging activity
    3. Common size of copper pipe for window AC and Split unit AC.
    4. What are the three (types) of brazing flames and its applications.
    5. Difference between brazing and soldering application.
    6. Safety procedures in using the oxygen and acetylene brazing activity.
    7. Safety Procedure of portable Butane gas blow torch usage.
    8. Types of brazing filler rod and its application.

LESSON 5: Actual Brazing of Copper pipe

    1. Short Quiz – from lesson 4 topic.
    2. Proper PPEs to be wear (eye goggle, hand gloves and Mask) and TBT
    3. General hand tools, brazing Set and Fire extinguisher
    4. Silver brazing filler rod (for copper-to-copper pipe joint application)
    5. Flaring and swaging of pipe
    6. Brazing activity and house keeping

LESSON 6-7: Proper Diagnostic, Trouble shooting, Maintenance and Repair.

    1. Short Quiz- from lesson 5 topic
    2. Window and Split unit AC not cooling.
    3. Current drawn amperes and pressure readings
    4. Water dripping and evaporator frost formations.
    5. Refrigerant Gas leakages
    6. System pump down meaning and procedures.
    7. How to perform system flushing and leak testing.
    8. System dehydration and evacuation
    9. Refrigerant gas charging, checking supply air off coil and return temperatures.
    10. How to check compression ratio of the compressor.
    11. Suction superheat and subcooling temperatures.
    12. Condenser and evaporator approach.
    13. Electrical controls and power circuits diagram
    14. wiring installation, Capacitors and Magnetic contactors wiring diagram.
    15. Thermostat and surface thermometer diagram.
    16. PPM checklist and procedures.

LESSON 8: Actual Trade Test for Copper Brazing

    1. Short Quiz- from lesson 6 & 7 topic
    2. Tool - Box talk and safety procedures.
    3. Preparation of brazing set and tools
    4. Actual copper brazing trade test

LESSON 9-10: FINALS / PRACTICAL TEST

    1. Major components of Refrigeration Cycle and its function.
    2. Identification of spare parts, tools and equipment.
    3. System reprocessing procedures.
    4. Proper Refrigerant charging and ideal running pressures
    5. Trouble shooting
    6. Maintenance procedures.
